Mark Ditzler

Fused Glass - A Design Perspective

May 26 - 30
Level: All Levels
Warm Shop

Mark DitzlerMark Ditzler is a Seattle glass artist specializing in decorative kilnfired glass. This class will focus on the many design possibilities of kilnformed glass. We will begin with the basics, learning proper glass cutting, and the planning and assembly of fused and slumped pieces. Then moving quickly to more advanced skills, students will learn to design with pre-made elements including color bars and wafers, cane and murrine, vitreous paints and lusters, silk screening and dichroic glass. Some flameworking and hot shop techniques will be covered, adding to the palette of design options. Discussions will include kiln operation, annealing, and some coldworking. We will learn to recognize many interesting ways of using color, line and transparency, and the smart use of flow and displacement of glass as a design tool. At the conclusion, students should have a full “toolbox” of skills, allowing them to successfully take their glass to a more advanced and personal level.
