Richard Parrish’s work was selected for the Corning Museum of Glass’ "New Glass Review 27," and he was awarded the American Craft Council Award of Achievement in 2003. Bas relief is found in the art and architecture of all cultures and has existed for thousands of years. It is a kind of carving or sculpture in which the figures are raised or depressed slightly from a flat background to give a three-dimensional effect. Subtle changes in the levels of the surface and the interplay of light and shadow on the planes enable us to see and appreciate the composition. The term is French for “low relief.” This class will explore design issues and techniques in creating bas relief glass pieces. It will use ceramic fiber papers and blanket materials to create complex (or simple) forms in thick kilnformed glass pieces with intricate surface relief, texture, color and light interactions. Both transparent and opaque glass will be used. Other materials for creating surface or reverse surface relief are explored, including silica plaster and clay. Students will explore relief through maquettes and finished glass pieces. Cold working options for carving and finishing will be addressed.
