David Walters has lived and worked as a glassblower in Seattle for the past 15 years and has worked for Lino Tagliapietra since 1994. Janusz Pozniak has worked professionally with numerous renowned glass artists including Benjamin Moore, Dante Marioni, Dale Chihuly, and Dick Marquis. This class will focus primarily on the blown form; how the vessel can convey meaning in a more sculptural sense, beyond a traditional, utilitarian or purely decorative approach. The course will cover many techniques to manipulate the bubble. It will help create a vocabulary that combines traditional vessel making with the use of less traditional techniques. These techniques will encourage the manipulation of the blown form in a new and more personal way. It will be an exploration in problem solving. There will be an opportunity to use the instructors during some of the demo time to execute ideas and designs to see how a problem might be approached by someone else. Please come with a sketchbook and a bunch of ideas. Color and surface application will be of secondary importance, but may also be discussed. This will be a course driven by technique in the service of ideas.
