Stack and Tack with Zach - with Zach Layhew
Description
Incalmo: (Italian) The technique of constructing an object, usually a vessel, by fusing two or more blown glass elements. The process, first practiced in the Islamic world in the Middle Ages, demands great precision because the edges of the adjoining elements must have precisely the same diameter.
Explore a more precise and efficient approach to the incalmo technique in this four-week class. Rather than assembling partial bubbles one at a time in the hot shop, you'll create thick-walled glass tubes that are cut and finished in the cold shop to create ring sections. These sections will then be stacked in the hot shop pickup ovens and tack-fused together before being picked up and worked into blown forms, such as bowls or spheres.
Throughout the class, we'll discuss coldworking techniques, kiln programs, overlays, collars, and approaches to creating non-bowl forms. While these topics are not the primary focus, they will be incorporated through demonstrations, lectures, and open discussion to expand your understanding of the possibilities of incalmo construction.
This class is designed for glass artists looking to refine their process, improve efficiency, and explore new ways of building complex blown forms.
Prerequisite: Hot Glass 3 or equivalent 72 hours experience with instructor permission required.
