Artist Residencies & Awards
As a hub for creativity and educational outreach, Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC) is committed to supporting glass artists at all levels and expanding public appreciation of what glass artists do. PGC offers these artist-focused programs:
- A PGC Residency is especially for glass artists with a project or program they seek to complete in PGC’s state-of-the-art studios.
- Idea Furnace is a collaboration between non-glass artists and PGC glass artists to realize a specific creative concept.
- The Ron Desmett Memorial Award for Imagination with Glass recognizes creative thinking in four categories and celebrates the late PGC cofounder and glass artist Ron Desmett.
PGC Artist Residencies
Pittsburgh Glass Center offers several residency tracks that provide direct artist support. This backing may include a stipend, travel expenses, and/or accommodations and allows artists time to hone their skills, create new work, or develop pieces for an exhibition at PGC or elsewhere.
We seek to work with non-glass artists to realize their ideas. Call it a collaboration—one that leads to amazing creative alliances and truly inspired works. Once a month, PGC invites one non-glass artist into the studio to discuss their design ideas, learn about the glassmaking process, and watch their design come to life. Our exchange regularly leads to mutual learning opportunities.
Ron Desmett Memorial Award
The Ron Desmett Memorial Award for Imagination with Glass is for artists who think outside the box, practice curiosity, and take risks to create unique, imaginative works that are either entirely glass or that incorporate glass.
Over the years, Pittsburgh Glass Center has facilitated over 114 residencies. These residencies have involved artists from all over the world, working in all of the different state-of-the-art studios PGC has to offer, and have ranged from just two weeks to six months in duration.
